Women’s Veteran project

Tom Harrison House Women’s Project (In collaboration with AFCFT, Salute Her and University Chester)

Current services for veterans are predominantly designed to meet the needs of men.

However, these services fail to consider the unique experiences of women working in highly stressful and potentially life-changing roles.

Research shows that there is a limited range of services dedicated to women in this field, especially for those who have struggled with poor mental health along with a dependency on legal or illegal drugs, including alcohol.

We are committed to supporting women seeking help for these challenges to their mental health.

This issue is important to us because our experience has shown that women in these roles face specific barriers as a result of their role. This often prevents or delays them from seeking timely or personalised support.

Such delays can lead to more complex and long-term physical and mental health issues.

Are you a serving or veteran woman over the age of 18 ?

Have you found it difficult to control your use of drugs or alcohol?

What some of the  participants said about the online programme…

“Having done the residential treatment in 2021 was a great opportunity to address new things that have come up for me in my personal life. I tried to attend as much as my life and circumstances allowed. Participating in the online sessions has definitely helped me with my personal growth.  It gave me new insights into what areas I need to work on in order to achieve personal growth. Very good material was used, which I can go back and look over if needed.  The facilitators were always very supportive to me personally and overall to each individual and as a group”. CM

“I figured out how my trauma has been affecting me, the psychology behind this gave me an insight into how it has shaped me, Awareness of this does help because I can begin to identify and stop negative behaviours. I met a wonderful group of women, and I felt very cared for, and that felt genuine. That helps me trust and allow myself to talk to others, I feel I have made some friends for life 😊 that has enriched my wellbeing and personal growth”. LS

What some of the participants said about the retreats…

“The weekend was extremely powerful, and I had the opportunity to delve into parts of myself I cannot see/don’t acknowledge and find some clarity in progressive next steps I can take for my healing journey. I learned to have more self-compassion for my myself and life experiences this gave me hope for my future” LD

“The retreat exceeded my expectations. I felt nurture and cared about. The venue was perfect, the staff are nicest most helpful I have met. I feel ready to allow love to flow through me, to allow myself to be accepted. It has been a gift beyond cash value”
